When we are in a life or death situation our body is wired to flood our system with cortisol and other stress hormones. Allowing us to mobilize massive amounts of energy to run, hide or fight (fight or flight response).

Great for survival.

What happens when it’s not life or death when we can’t RUN, HIDE or FIGHT? When the trigger is our boss?

We drain our systems of vital energy for growth and repair. We turn off the systems that allow for innovation, creativity, inspiration, and intuition. Not to mention digestion and cell regeneration and repair.

The double edged sword of human intellect is we can trigger the stress response just through ‘thinking’ about the situations and worst case scenarios in our lives, irrespective of what is actually going on.

So not only does our body get flooded every time we perceive a threat, it does so EVERY time we think about it. Our body doesn’t know the difference for example between thinking about being robbed and it actually happening.

We spend our time thinking about all the places, people and events in our lives that make us feel stressed. So our bodies believe that we are constantly in a life or death situation.

Our brain & body doesn’t know the difference between what is real or what is imagined.

So just thinking about the dentist triggers the same massive release of stress hormones as really being there. Just thinking about seeing that colleague we are not getting on with is exactly the same as bumping into them in the lift. To our body, just thinking about that traumatic event from our past is exactly like it is happening over and over again in this moment.

The more time we spend ‘thinking’ about our problems the longer our body stays in emergency, using all our life energy to run, fight or hide. When there is nothing to run from, hide from or fight in that moment.

And here is the rub- our thoughts trigger the stress response which gives us a rush of energy. And those stress hormones are like any other drug (regardless of whether it is produced by you or some pharmaceutical), they are addictive.

So we are addicted to our thoughts for the chemical (emotional) payoff they provide. Irrespective of whether or not we like it.

  • Depression (cycle of thoughts from the past)
  • Anxiety (cycle of thoughts from the past projected into the future)
  • Grief (past)Natural Stress relief
  • Overwhelm (past into the future)
  • Mental breakdown (past)
  • panic (past into the future)

It’s all a cycle of addiction to the thoughts of the past or projecting those past memories into the future. Our body just does what it’s told and creates the emotional cocktails that become our life. And most of it is all UNCONSCIOUS, we have done it so many times our body does it without the thoughts being conscious. It has become automated stress.
