What is NLP coaching?
NLP — Neuro Linguistic Programming — is a way of understanding the patterns behind how we think, feel, communicate and respond.
We all develop ways of interpreting what happens around us. We make meaning, form beliefs, create associations and respond according to patterns that can become so familiar they simply feel like us.
Which is why you can know perfectly well how you would like to respond and still find yourself doing the same thing again.
You can know you don’t want to get anxious.
Know you don’t want to lose your temper.
Know you want to stop overthinking, procrastinating, people pleasing or repeating the same relationship pattern.
And still find that when the moment arrives, the old response is already there.
That’s because knowing something consciously and changing an established pattern are not the same thing.
NLP coaching works with the patterns underneath the response — the beliefs, meanings, associations, internal language and emotional responses that influence what happens automatically.
When you know what you want to change — but keep doing the same thing
Have you ever decided that next time you’ll respond differently...
and then found yourself saying the same thing, feeling the same way or falling straight back into the same behaviour?
Sometimes you can even watch yourself doing it while it’s happening.
That doesn’t mean you need more willpower.
It usually means there is more going on underneath the behaviour than the behaviour itself.
One of the things I have always loved about NLP is that it gives us a way to work with how the pattern is organised, rather than simply telling you what you should do instead.
The aim isn’t to spend forever analysing the problem.
It’s to understand enough about what is creating the current response that we can change it — and begin orienting you toward what you actually want instead.
NLP techniques
NLP includes a wide range of processes for working with the way we create our internal experience.
Some of the NLP techniques I may use include:
- Reframing — changing the meaning or perspective attached to an experience.
- Anchoring — intentionally accessing and strengthening useful emotional states.
- Parts Integration — resolving the experience of wanting two conflicting things at once.
- Timeline Therapy — working with the emotions, beliefs and meanings connected with past experiences.
- Belief and values work — identifying and changing patterns that are no longer supporting what you want.
- Language and focus — noticing how the language you use, internally and externally, directs attention and reinforces particular experiences.
But you do not need to work out which NLP technique you need before you come in.
You’re not choosing a process from a menu.
We start with what is happening now, what you want instead, and what appears to be keeping the current pattern in place.
A major part of change is where your focus goes
wouldIt is very easy to become completely absorbed in what you don’t want.
The relationship problem.
The anxiety.
The behaviour.
The lack of confidence.
The thing you wish you would stop doing.
But if all of your attention remains on the problem, the problem continues to organise the conversation.
A fundamental part of NLP coaching is becoming much clearer about what you actually want instead.
Not simply:
I don’t want to feel like this.
But:
How do you want to feel?
How would that response feel?
What do you want to experience instead?
That distinction matters.
Because change is not about getting rid of an unwanted response.
It is about creating something different in its place.
NLP is a foundation of how I work
I trained extensively in NLP, Timeline Therapy and hypnosis, and NLP remains one of the foundations of the way I understand personal change.
You can read more about my background on the About Skye page.
My work has also evolved over the years.
I don’t sit opposite somebody thinking, Which NLP technique can I apply to this problem?
I’m interested in the person in front of me.
What is happening?
What do they want?
What is driving the current response?
And what is going to create the most useful shift?
Depending on what we’re working with, I may draw on NLP and Timeline Therapy alongside other approaches and understandings that have become part of my work over time.
The modality is useful.
But the point is the change.
How NLP coaching with me usually works
Most of my coaching clients begin with my seven-week Breakthrough Process.
That is the structure I use because the thing someone arrives wanting to change is rarely sitting neatly by itself.
The behaviour may connect with beliefs.
The beliefs may connect with earlier experiences.
The emotional response may be tied to identity, values, relationships or long-established ways of interpreting what is happening.
Trying to compress all of that into one isolated session can mean working with only one part of the pattern.
The Breakthrough Process gives us the time to work through the bigger picture and create change across the areas that are actually connected.
It is strongly grounded in NLP, while allowing me to use the approaches that are most useful for the individual person.

Start with a conversation
You don’t need to know about NLP, Timeline Therapy or any particular technique.
You may already know that NLP is something you want to use, or you may simply know there is something you’d like to change.
The complimentary discovery call gives us a chance to talk about what is happening, what you would like instead and whether the way I work feels like the right fit for you.
